Volunteers

We offer a volunteer program for current high school student. We seeks to recruit individuals who are willing to dedicate their time, skills, and knowledge to support the education of our students during the summer break. The benefits of volunteering in a summer school program are numerous. It provides an opportunity to gain valuable experience working in a teaching and learning environment, develop their leadership skills, and improve their communication and teamwork skills. It also enables them to give back to their community and make a positive impact on the lives of others. The program provides a chance to develop new skills, build their resume, and make meaningful connections with students, teachers, and other volunteers and become a part of a supportive and collaborative community.

Volunteer Positions

• Summer Full Time (8:15AM - 3:15 PM)

• Summer Part Time (12:45 PM - 3:15PM)

• Saturday Full Time (8:45 AM -  2:15PM)

Duties of volunteers include but are not limited to

• watching over the kids before class and during lunch

• taking attendance

• grading homework, classwork, quizzes, exams

• entering grades into our system

• helping with classroom management

• assisting with administrative work

• providing one-on-one or small group support to students

Duration and Time

• Summer lasts six weeks generally from early July to mid-August. Classes are Mondays to Fridays from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM.  Volunteer times depends on position (full time vs part time)

• Saturday classes span from late September/early October to late May/ early June (typically 30 weeks). Classes are Saturdays only from 9:00 - 2:00.

Location

• Classes are held at IS 187 (Christa McAuliffe Intermediate School) located at 1171 65th Street Brooklyn, NY 11220.

Compensation

• Volunteers are not paid. This position does not count as an job or an internship.

• Volunteers get their Letter of Verification on the last day of class certifying that they have completed the volunteer program with us along with the final hours.

Application Process 

• Fill out the following TA Application and email a PDF copy to angeladvantage8ave@gmail.com. You can either fill it out online or print it out. Once received you will get a confirmation from us. 

• Mini-virtual Interview (For summer program expect an email regarding the interview mid-May. For Saturday Program around early September). For new staff members, there will be a short virtual interview via Zoom. For more information visit interview page.

• Wait for results and decisions. Decisions will be released via email. Note that just because you applied does not guarantee a position as there are often more applicants than positions we have available.
